Hi Folks

I have just come through a strange occurrence. My side bar stopped working and I could not activate it, so I re-booted, and when Windows was going through its usual start up I got the message that my disk needed scanned for inconsistencies, so the hard drive was checked and then it re-booted me in to Windows. When I get into Windows there is a message saying that windows has shut down giving me 2 options of checking on line and shutting down, but no matter which one I chose it kept coming back as if it was stuck in a loop. I logged of then restarted the PC again and here I am back into Windows were everything seems to be ok. I am sorry for the long winded story, I wondered if anybody else has experienced the same problem.

when you come back upto to windows goto start - run - type CMD that will take you to a command prompt ( old dos window )

type chkdsk /f that is check disk fix

sounds like something you maybe download has corrupted something but give that a try and see if it corrects any errors

also you can boot into safe mode and goto start - run - msconfig and disable all your startup programs

I am told I don't have enough privledges and need to run it in elevated mode, I don't know how to work round that, but I did discover something, soon as I try to type something in the search box I get the error message about windows stopping, I don't need to re-boot or anything, I just click restart.

Sounds like your system files have some how become corrupted .. and need to be fixed .. maybe something you tried to install is not playing nice with vista

You can try to restore / repair the install of vista there are a few forum posts about this you can find via search function on the boards

Or if that doesn't work you can try to use the a restore point if you have created any

If all else fails .. format and re-install vista .. and double check before you install any programs that they are coded for vista ..

Or you do get 90 days free support from microsoft from the day of installation of vista .. so might as well use it i would give them a call and see if one of the tech over the phone doesn't know of a simple way of fixing your issue.

right click the cmd icon and select "run as administrator". You can then run chkdsk

Ok I will try that, and I think I will try running sfc as well
I will get back to you later (probably tomorrow sometime) to see if it has worked

Well I'm back
I tried to run sfc /scannow as administrator and it got to 41% then I was told about not having resource privileges (I think that is what it said) so I came out of that.
Then the system went a bit crazy and internet explorer started crashing.
So I ran chkdsk /f and was told to run it at a reboot, so I did and when I got into Windows I was told my sound driver had changed and I would need to install it again, so that might have been causing the problem I don't know, it is to early to say. I will keep you posted. I hope it's not to boring, but it might help others if I find a solution without re-installing Vista
