If you have a specific problem fixed by a specific official Microsoft hotfix, try it.

But if you haven't run into a problem yet, don't install a hotfix for it.

If it's not broken, don't fix it.

These are not on Windows Update.

These are hotfixes you can install if you run into specific problems.

After lots of wavering, Microsoft has finally made the due date for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) official: The update will ship in the latter half of 2007

No,

When it gets released it will be an update for existing users.

Though if someone bought Vista when the Service Pack got released it would probably come with it.

SP stands for Service Pack, You download them free from Microsoft. Basically they just contain all the hotfixes put out since the last Service Pack/OS Release plus any other core improvements/fixes. There have been 2 so far for Windows XP.

Actually, service packs will be different for Windows Vista, so waiting for a huge
pack which will make Vista magically be much better, will not be that necessary.

Vista is very good out of the box. It's hardware/software companies/authors
which have to get their products/drivers ready. That's where the main prob-
lem lies, if you ask me.

Quote

"Will we continue to have service packs? Yes we will," said Michael Sievert,
corporate VP for Windows marketing at Microsoft. "But they have a different
level of importance today as people get their updates in real-time using
Windows Update," said Sievert, according to a transcript of a conference
call he held Monday with financial analysts.

As a result, Sievert said Microsoft won't release a "big bang" service pack for
Windows Vista similar in size and scope to Windows XP Service Pack 1, which
was issued in 2002 with mixed results. That 30-Mbyte download was designed
to patch major security holes, improve Windows XP's overall performance,
and help Microsoft comply with advertisement U.S. Department of Justice
mandates.

Sievert said new development tools and processes that Microsoft employed
during the creation of Windows Vista also lessen the need for a major service
pack. Among other things, the company used automated reporting technology
that allowed it to collect bug reports from beta testers in real time, "and then
code against those as we were developing the operating system," Sievert said."
