Your internet explorer should remember your log in anyway, I would have a look at your cookie settings if you are not staying logged in.

I'm using FireFox, which doesn't keep me logged in.

Sorry, it came back again shortly after I posted that, and I have no idea why. Yes I'm using the current version!

New prob!

After choosing a new theme and re-starting my computer, it re-loads the default Vista Forums theme, instead of the other one I chose.

edit... DISREGARD, I found it a page back... sorry!

Edited to add: I have noticed that the theme reverts back to the default one after a restart. Is this normal?

Happens to me as well. Set it to slate and it reverts back to the leaf after a reboot.

I changed line 8 of the HTML code, as mentioned above, in the html file called 'main.html' found in the folder TheVistaForums.gadget:

<html>
<head>
<title>The Vista Forums Post Gadget</title>
<link href="Themes/The Vista Forums/gadget_layout.css" rel="stylesheet"
type="text/css" />

&lt;script LANGUAGE="JScript" >
var theme ="Slate";

and now it is Slate by default after a restart.

hey that sounds fun.....where can i start doing that...changing the cod and such

The files for our gadget (as well as all your other currently installed gadgets) is in the following folder :

Quote

C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\

The AppData folder, as well as a lot of others, is not configured to display by default, by default it is hidden, so you need to set your Windows Explorer to display "hidden files".

To do this :
  • Click on the Organize button as shown on the attached pic

  • Click on Folder and Search Options

  • In the Folder Options window that is displayed, click on the View tab

  • Change the Hidden files and folders option to Show hidden files and folders
Coincidentally this is also where you can opt to show file extensions and change a lot of other options for Windows Explorer.

Now, if you follow Metal Mickey's instructions :

Quote

Would I be mistaken thinking this would be as easy as changing

var theme ="The Vista Forums";

to

var theme ="Slate";

in the 'main.html'

Just edit the main.html file (with notepad or any other text editor) and change the line as shown. The themes all reside in the Themes folder and the name of each should exactly match the folder they are in, i.e. "Slate", "Gamer", "Petal Power", etc.

If you want to have this as the default the next time you install the gadget then simply take all the files within the gadget's folder and put them in one zip file, give it a relevant name and rename the file from .zip to .gadget as the gadget files are simply compressed packages. Then once you double click on your renamed file it should be installed as you have set it.

Please note that the Vista Forums gadget is copyright property of these forums and should not be duplicated, edited and re-used for any other site. (Believe us, We'll find out)

Right click and open it in notepad, then edit the text suggested above and resave it.

if i missed someone else asking this question then i am sorry.....but still think about other people that see that and how it must seem to them....if they ask a noob question are they going to get the same reaction

this is a place to get help with this type of thing

Is there any way to get the reader to display forums that are only viewable to certain groups? e.g. so Helpers can see Helper's Lounge posts, subscribers can see the Rumpus Room posts, and staff can see staff room posts? I guess this is an RSS issue rather than a gadget thing. Or does it do this already and I overlooked it?

That would be an RSS thing and the gadget should be universal in any case, we don't want Joe Public knowing what we get up to behind closed doors :blink:

I've just updated the gadget to version 2.2 (might take a couple of days to clear thru the Microsoft gallery), a couple of new themes have been added to reflect the forum's themes.

Download it from here

I have ran into a problem with trying to change the default theme. I can find the Main.html, but when I open it, Vista only lists Word and IE as default editors. The page is Blank, by dragging my mouse over the page I find 2 lines but no text.
Anyone have any Ideas as to what is going on with this?
Ok, figured that out, had to right click on the page and tell it to show source, You would think if IE is the default HTML editor it woiuld display the code when you ask it to edit the page

Right click on the Main.html and click on "Open With...", then untick the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".

Choose notepad to open the file with, if you have to browse then you should find it in C:\Windows.
