Running on Vista Home Prem, as it so states on the left.
When I installed CS 1.6, my graphics were, to say, crap (which I don't understand since I ran it perfectly on XP, like so many others)
I found out that my setting were on Software mode, and when I tried changing to OpenGL, game crashed and burned.
*STEAM SUPPORT AWAY*
One link that may have helped me didn't work.
Does anyone know if I can get OpenGL grapics on a AMD 64 Athlon Process 3500+ 2.2 GHz
I believe my graphics card is an ATI Radeon Xpress 200, anyway to check this would be helpful, since I am a computer nubcake!
Thanks in advance.

Sorry to say I don't have an answer to your problem, however, since you started a 1.6 topic, I might as well post my problem here as well. So all was well in my little CS 1.6 world for a long time. I was running it on XP and then on Vista X64 after I did my clean install. I was operating with a 23'' LCD monitor. When I switched to a smaller monitor temporarily, it still ran fine. Now I switched back to my 23'' and I get BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) every time I open CS. Either through Steam or from a desktop shortcut, before I even see the game menu, it just glitched for a second and then BSOD restart. Anyone else experiencing these problems or have a possible solution? I have tried uninstalling HL, Steam, and CS 1.6 as well as deleting every trace of those programs on my system. After a clean install of those programs, I still have the same problem. Any help would be appreciated! Cheers!

Update: This same problem also occurs if I try to run TFC. This may be a Steam related issue. Still screwed :)

@ blackblade
Check the settings you have for your video card. For my Geforce card the default settings were different than they were on Windows XP. Also do a windows update.

@Llama
Again it's probably your video card drivers causing the BSOD. There aren't any settings you can set in HL1 games to make it crash other than setting your resolution too high.

Is there a way to set the resolution so that the game will run in a certain resolution and not effect my desktop?

Ok well I got the game to run in a windowed mode by customising the resolution in the icon target line, however, I can see my entire taskbar and the top of an explorer window while I am playing. I have a large screen so it is not a huge issue, just a little distracting. Any thoughts?

Customize your taskbar so that it autohides and is not always on top. Then change the resolution to what your desktop is so the window covers the whole screen.

@Rooky
CL_flushpacket is a large amounts of packets being undelivered. Open up console and set all these commands:
fps_modem 0
fps_max 101
cl_cmdrate 101
rate 25000
cl_updaterate 101
cl_resend 1.5
cl_cmdbackup 1
ex_interp .1 (You can use .01 for better registration but the models will be a little skippy, or try between .1 and .01)
net_graph 3 (This will tell your current fps and packet data. Use net_graph 0 to disable.)
All these settings are assuming you have a decent computer with a good broadband connection. (256kb down/128kb up). If these settings don't work then post back your a screen shot of your netgraph, computer specs and connection speeds. You can do a connection speed test at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest

I had the same problem on Vista X64 Ultimate SP1 . The game was choppy and it was not caused by the network. Switching resolutions (tried 2048x1536,1600x1200,1280x1024,1024x768 and 800x600) and render engines didn't help one bit. Direct3D introduced a noticeable lag to input. I did not try window mode or disabling Aero. I will install Vista again soon and I'll experiment with it.
