Does anyone know how to disable the autorun "feature" in Vista? I can't find anything in either Group Policies or the registry. With XP, you could turn it off with either method.

Thanks in advance.

I used Startup Inspector when I was running the Vista beta, so I assume it will work with the released versions. Besides the normal startup programs you can also disable programs started by the registry.

You don't need software to disable Autorun.

ditto... never use 3rd party software to change a basic windows function:

open control panel and type "autoplay" into the search bar, now just change software to "take no action". DO the same for any other media types you want:

This article doesn't reference Vista. In my comparisons, the Registry structure for these items are different than XP.

Agree about using third party software. But the Control Panel (as you have well documented in your post) is geared to CD and DVD media, and not USB flash drives and external hard drives, which is more of what I was really after. No matter what settings I select in that window, Vista will try to read the drives to determine the content. I want to stop that behavior.

Although I really prefer to make the changes myself without the aid of third party software, Tweak VI did the trick. I really wish I knew how to make those setting changes myself. But I can't argue with success!! :)

Although the article MrHappy posted does not mention Vista specifically, it is the correct answer, not some happy-ass who knows what it's going to do to your PC third party tweak software.

I'm not sure which update disables autorun, but it used to work on my PC until very recently. I apply the updates regularly.

Ooops, almost forgot. If the autorun works, your registry value is more than likely set to hex=95. If it doesn't, it's more than likely set to hex=ff. You can turn autorun off/on for specific devices if you like but I set mine to hex=95 to autorun any cd/dvd in any cd/dvd drive.

Fat Jonny's solution works with USB drivers. I've tried. It's succesfully working. I recommend this solution in order not to use third party softwares.
Thanks.
