Hello all,

I'm new here. I don't normally register to forums anymore, but this place looked pretty sweet, so I went for it. Plus, I need some help.

A friend of mine is running Vista Home Premium and trying to play Call of Duty 2. I have Vista Ultimate and running COD2 without any issues at all (except having to run in compatibility mode). He, on the other hand, can't seem to get it to work at all. I've installed it for him numerous times but to no avail. I've tried running the installer in compatibility mode, attempted to run the game with and without comp mode, even patched it to the latest version. Nothing seems to work.

The problem is (with multi player at least) that it will load up to the black screen, wait a little while, then crash out with the "This application has stopped working and a solution is trying to be found." It of course finds no solution and just tells me to exit out.

I have had no issues running this game on Vista Ultimate or Vista Business, which I have on my desktop and laptop respectively. However, on his desktop with Vista Home Premium, it just doesn't seem to work at all. I've updated his DirectX using the web installer (for version 9, since COD2 uses 9) and updated his video drivers. Nothing is working.

Does anyone have any ideas on what's wrong? Thanks in advance for the help.

Oh right, sorry.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz
2GB Corsair RAM
EVGA nVidia 8800GTS
320GB HDD

I believe that's it. I'm not sure on his motherboard's model number, but it is an MSI with I believe the nVidia chipset. It was a prebuilt PC off Newegg.com.

COD 2 by defualt useing Direct X 7 ( I think) but I know its low. You have to change the video settings to use DirectX 9

I'm not so sure it'd be 7, the graphics are too good for that, maybe 8. How would you go about configuring it the way to suggest?

Sometimes turning off aero, sidebar and other background tasks can work also just set your theme to Vista basic. I would also update DX9 and make sure all the drivers are up to date for the soundcard, graphics and chipset.

DX10 will work with DX9 programmes it is already built in, but for most games you you will still need to update DX9 as normal for them to run.

you can download the latest DX9 here

I haven't had access to my friend's computer yet, so I haven't been able to give any of this a try. I have updated his DX9 to the latest though, that was one of the first things I tried. I recommend disabling Aero and Sidebar and try that, as Jay2Kay suggested.

how do you disable aero? (scrap that)

i have the windows theme as classic, i run in admin an xp compata! the strange thing is an i forgot to mention it is that before i installed a new gfx card i had a terrible intergrated one! when i tried loading cod2 on old one i had a dx error, which was understandable. since i have upgraded and installed my new gfx card, i get the above problem cod2_mp.exe stopped working! i have all updates on my gfx card so i'm wondering if i have done something to mess it up when i personally installed it!

I'm having the same problem as Melchiorus except that before it starts loading I get the "It appears that Call Of Duty 2 did not quit properly... Would you like to run it in safe mode?" I've tried it in both safe mode and normal and with both i get the same "Cod2 has stopped working windows is now searching for a solution". As Melchiorus said it doesn't find a solution.

I've set the compatibility to 'Windows XP Service Pack 2' and it hasn't worked.

A friend of mine is having the same problem and is also running on Windows Vista Home Premium.

Is there anyway to fix it? I'm sure I have DX9. I'm also running Guild Wars and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion perfectly fine.

Here's my spec.
Dell Inspiron 530
Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit)
Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz
2046MB RAM
600GB HD
Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT

P.S. First post has it all been done correctly?

Hello, I know this is kinda old and I'm new to this forum thing, but I'm having the same problem w/ Call of Duty 2. I start up the game and see a bit of the Activision startup graphic, then it just feezes. I've tried all of the suggested fixes I've found, turn off aero and all background programs, set resolution to 800x600, run the program as admin and in compatibility mode for XP, but none of these seem to work. Has anyone found any other solutions??? I know I don't have the best computer, but it does meet all the minimum requirements for the game. Here are my specs:

HP Pavilion dv6045nr laptop
Windows Vista Home Premium
AMD dual core TL-56 processor 1.80GHz
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7200
120 GB HD

Thanks in advance for any help

This applies to all people have this issue:

Have you all installed DirectX 9 on Vista???

Vista comes pre-installed with DirectX 10 only; but most older games require directX9. DirectX 9/8/7 games will not work with Direct X 10; you will need to additionally installed DX9.

In vista DX 9 and DX10 run side by side as two individual graphics codecs.

Hope this helps.

I'm sorry, but this is utter rubbish and I'm kindof amazed that there isn't a techy mod on these boards who takes responsibility for removing this kind of mis-information.

The only big issue with Dx10 backward compatibility was to provide access to the new, Vista only, graphic apps that are used for things like Aero. To do that DirectX10 contains a few different versions of Direct3D to grant access & compatibility.

You can run legacy DirectX graphics under Vista Dx10 no problem at all without modification (I run Guild Wars at Dx8 to increase performance without ever having to install Dx8!).

Anyway, back on topic:

I've been bashing the CoD2 problem around for a few hours now and here's the solution.

Open the shortcut to the exe and change the target to read...

"C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 2\cod2sp_s.exe" +set com_introplayed 1 :dribble:

Note the placing of the quotation marks.

This will force CoD2 to skip the intros and go straight to the main menu with no hang - the problem actually seems to be an incompatibility between CoD2's video and the latest nVidia drivers.

Enjoy!

DirectX 10 is not backwards compatible. If you can run your games in DirectX 9 without installing it yourself, it might be because it was installed with a game that required DirectX 9.

I also have a problem when trying to run CoD 2 on my Vista Computer. When starting up the game it says "sound files are missing"?
Anyone knows what I should do?

It can't be a problem with DirectX 10 or surely the single player wouldn't load and run. I only have a problem with the multiplayer.

To get cod2 mp working, try plugging in a microphone to the microphone jack, that sounds stupid but im running home premium and it worked for me.
