I tried that with the most recent set, and I get a different error message. Apparently it can find no hardware compatible with the drivers.

Update,

It seems that even though the menus are all messed up and are not 100% visible you can still change them (I sat my old laptop beside me running XP, so I could see where the options are relative to the screen bars etc.) I was able to set the video settings to high and my audio settings to high. However I was guessing sometimes if the box was clicked or not.

I jammed out BF1942 tonight for the first time since I first loaded up and saw the menus were all messed up. Overall it ran....however, every now and then it would just crash...then Vista would say do you want to see if there is a solution....and Vistas answer to the problem was upgrade to the most recent version of the game....which I already was running 1.6.101.

I played a solo game, and internal LAN game with my son and overall the game ran ok, but at times it would hang up and run choppy and as mentioned before crash (a real pain).

This is one of my favourite games (still play at least 3 times a week online) and to think with this new OS a game that should run well given my new laps specs, lags at times and even crashes. This isn't starting my Vista experience off on a good step....I'm afraid to try C&C generals now which is another Fav.

I have tried all the steps mentioned in this forum with the same result each time, so it looks like I am going to have to wait for Nvidia to develop better drivers before I'll get the most out BF1942 again :(

If anyone does find a fix I would love to hear it.

Thanks,

Hi Hello I have the same problem..
We brought our laptop a few days ago and installed BF1942
The laptop comes with Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit
We have downloaded the update for BF1942 and when we launch BF1942
It looks ok but the menu looks funny with a white background on the top and
the bottom. You can't see where your clicking on the game
The crosshair in the game also disappears and reappears
I have downloaded the newest video drivers for the laptop NVIDIA GeForce Go 7700 Driver Version: 7.15.11.40
also have tried compatibility mode to Windows XP Service Pack 2 and still no go..
Does anyone know how to fix this plz?

Another update,

I received official video driver updates from HP for my NVIDIA card and still no dice. Also if you end up playing the game you may find no crosshairs showing up on any guns except the Engineers rifle (This basically renders the game unplayable). I presently have an open ticket with EA technical support.

Based on some other forms they suggest running the game as an administrator as well this will solve the map load crash problem, but it does not solve the menu or crosshair problems.

Once I hear back from EA I will update the post.

EA is giving me round about fixes that so far have not solved any issues.....waiting on my last reply to them.

I too was having the same problems with my Geforce go 7400 running Vista Premium, untill I tried these recent steps. First find your Nvidia folder (mine is located in Computer:Local Disc C: Nvidia). After you find this folder double click Winvista and find the number of your drivers (mine is 162.22). Double click on the numbered driver folder and find the file that reads like nv_disp and click on it. After you find this number go to http://www.laptopvideo2go.com. Click on Community Forum and scroll down till you find the number of your drivers. At the top download the modded inf and once its downloaded copy all the information in Notepad. Now paste this info over the nv_disp document. Now go into device manager by right clicking on Computer, selecting properties, and clicking on device manager. Find your display driver and right click on it and select update driver software. Click browse my computer for the software. Then select Let me pick from a list of device drivers. Then select Have Disk. When the "Install from Disk" box pops up click Browse at the bottom. Find your nv_disp file in your Nvidia folder and select it. Click next and let it install. Now restart your computer and BF 42 should work for you.

So as outlined in the sticky the menus in Battlefield 1942 aren't working properly. Basically I can't really click anything as it were, as 80% of the menus don't show.

I attempted installing the 158.24 drivers (if I remember correctly from the other thread) from nvidia, but it came with this message:
"the nvidia setup program could not locate any devices that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now close"

I'm running a Nvidia 8400M GS.

I'm running nvidia 7950 dell xps m1710 --- nsame menu problems and no crosshairs! This is my favorite game ever and it does not seem that anyone can find a solution....one result I got said something about laptoptogo.com but that was just a sham...advertisement. Anyone out there got the kung fu to help me? I even ran xp compatability mode from properties and still had same problems. Same result you got, too when I tried to get newer drivers.

I tried to do that and all I got was an advertisement to buy something. laptopvideotogo.com is not a solution as far as I can tell.

Okay, I'm only going to type this up once, then post it on a few forums. I have found a somewhat GLITCHY but still workable solution for playing Battlefield 1942 on your laptop with Windows Vista. At least, this worked for me in solving those INCURABLE (I tried every solution possible I came across to no avail) white menus. If you are NOT a fan of coping with gerrywrigging and dealing with some bugs, then don't bother with this fix! I'll outline the errors I've found so far in this as well. So here is what you do:
  • Open the game. If you want to, shake your fist at the white menus and Bill Gates for his crappy OS.
  • Start a single player game. Choose CAMPAIGN, then hit LOAD. At this point, the white should turn black.
  • Hit escape! You can let the whole thing load if you want, but you won't have cross-hairs in that game.
  • Start a new game. Your menus should be black still on the main screen. You can play now!

There are many drawbacks to this; for one, you have to do this every time after you play a NEW game. That means when you quit the game you are in, you must redo the above load of a single player campaign and escape from the map loading menu. If your laptop has any speed though, this will really only take maybe 10 to 15 seconds of your time. Also, it is more prone to crashing if you do this, but still it's only about 1/8 of the time it does that one.

On top of that though, there are a few in-game technical difficulties as listed below, plus what I did about them.
  • Infantry:
Disappearing bullets and clips - When you're reloading your gun and then have one remaining clip left, this remaining clip will drop to 0 and you'll still be out of ammo. Sometimes you will have a bullet missing, too. If you toggle to a different weapon and back, it will put your bullet count right regardless.
Ammo dumps don't reload right - You go up to an ammo dump, but your clip number will sit at 1. Toggle away and back to your weapon and it will be fine.
Direct hits don't land -This is purely speculation... But I'm a killer sniper, and sometimes shots that I swear should have landed repeatedly do not land. Maybe I just sucked, but who knows?
Grenades! - NEVER EVER right-click to throw them! EVER! You will throw one grenade, and then another will be thrown automatically along with the one you just tossed... At your feet. Not cool.
Grenades! 2.0 - You will throw one grenade, fine. You throw the second... It will LOOK LIKE you ran out and it switched you to another weapon. You are still using your THIRD grenade, though. Just left-click throw it, or toggle between weapons again like the clip bugs.

  • Tanks:
No visible shell fired - This comes in a specific-looking format. You will recoil as though you just shot, but you won't see the shell you just bombed with. It comes a second later, as though the recoil came early. So long as you keep clicking your target and are on target, this one isn't so big a deal either.
No visible anti-tank fire - Watch out for this one! Anti-tank will be assaulting you, but you won't actually see their shells. Your tank will drop in health though, and you'll get knocked around. Just keep an eye on your health.
Trouble entering tanks - This might also be my imagination, but even if your allies don't see any enemies and are just sitting there like a bunch of fools in their nice tank, but they will steadfastly refuse to let you in. My solution to this... Is often team killing. Yeah... One snipe shot to the gunner's head (with NO OTHER CPU ALLIES AROUND, or they'll jump right in after) and you hop in. Rough, but effective!

  • Additional:
Others "glide" rather than walk - Basically, you see distant figures not running, but sliding forward with no leg movements. It's a little annoying, but inconsequential.

In conclusion, most of the bugs can be fixed by toggling weapons. Again, it takes a little patience to learn to play like this. But I look at it this way: the only way the game is even fair is if I'm handicapped a little. Playing the game is more than enough reward for the troubles.

I am having the same problem with the menu. :shiftyninja:

It is really annoying isn't it?? :realmad:

Also, when i start up BF1942 or FSX for that matter, the game is smaller that the screen, in the middle and surrounded by black. I don't know how to make it full screen, i've tried everything!! I have a HP pavilion dv2806TU note book, if that helps.

Can anyone help me out?? That would be much appreciated. THX

Same problems, Toshiba Satellite laptop 2GB RAM, Intel Express video, Vista Business, menu bars hiding, no crosshair, smaller screen. I can play but it sucks. Tried admin, xp compatibility, +fullscreen 1. Nothing works.

Anyone with actual solution please?

PS. BF 2 works just fine. But I prefer 1942 anyday.

Just installed BF1942 after upgrading from XP to Vista the other month....exact same problems stated above about menu glitchs, no cross hair and might I add vehicle shadows are screwed up aswell.

Anyone found a fix yet?

Ofcourse I am on a laptop with intel processor/MB and go 7400 gpu.

Well I just found the solution myself with the latest compatable drivers for my GPU at ttp://laptopvideo2go.com/
Bit of a complex way to install them but there is everything you need on that site and in its forum.

Okay, let's look at a different angle on this beast, because it's not exactly VISTA.

I'm running a MacBook with Vista, using BootCamp. When I run BF1942, the game runs JUST FINE. No problems. No strange resolution glitch with the white (and later, black) box for the odd aspect ratio. I get my cross hairs and everything is fine.

My friend is running a small Toshiba notebook with similar settings, although there are slight differences. Intel board, chipset, etc. Everything is pretty much the same, save the processor and the video. (His is a core2duo 1.6 with intel 965 express, mine is a core2duo 2.1ghz and with Intel GMA x3100 chipset / video)

HE has ALL of those problems with BF1942.

I don't KNOW if this helps, but the only difference between his Vista and MY Vista... he's using the framework 2.0 bit, and I'm using Framework 3.5SP1. Perhaps it IS drivers and I just happen to have the latest-to-date stuff, but I'm not buying that. But it's CERTAINLY not "just because it's Vista."

BF1942 ALSO runs on my gaming desktop, which is running Vista-64. No problems there. (It ALSO has Framework 3.5SP1 on it.)

Other similarities (to help narrow down other possible suspects), we both have Vista Service Pack 1, and use DirectX 10. We both have Intel processors and chipsets, although his is the 965, mine is the x3100. Not that it MATTERS, but his screen is 11 inches, mine is 13.1 - we both run 1280x800 resolution.
Any other differences would have no relevance (hdd size, bus speed, etc).

I hope this helps someone in some way so that a solution can be fully realized.

...And stuff.

HOLY FREAKING BANANAS!!!! BF1942 Finally works with Windows 7 Build 7100. No more Punkbuster "unknown API error" kicks.

I'm dancing a jig right now... seriously.
