Did I say yet in here that I actually like Norton? Just NOT Norton 360, that one is crap. I don't know why noone likes it, the only real problem I know of is when you have another antivirus program it messes things all up.

NOD32: "Accept NO substitutes" fellas...

For the BEST in speed & throughput of operations (because it's largely MOSTLY written in PURE Win32 Assembler language, with a F A S T engine/algorithm), AND, for the BEST in HEURISTICS (best-guess based upon analysis type tech, "smells like duck, looks like a duck, sounds like a duck - MUST BE A DUCK" type of work) - the TRUE MARK OF EXCELLENCE in an antivirus product... imo, @ least.

I say that, simply because HEURISTICS excellence is indicative of being able to find, what NOBODY ELSE CAN, & can turn up "previously unknown threats" for analysis via submission to the AntiVirus OEM themselves (which many do, via their "quarantine" features etc. et al).

Not knocking NAV Corporate 10.2, my former fav (since it is FAR lighter on resources than the Norton 360 client package etc. & other variants from NAV, but, using the essentially SAME scanning engines etc. as the others no less... just lighter, & FASTER)... OR, AVG + AntiVir (other 2 I have tried over time, both decent, BUT, AVG does give you email protection in its FREEBIE model, whereas last time I tried it? Avira AntiVir (I used it before AVIRA bought it out) does not, last I knew @ least).

I just have found that the folks from ESET here:

http://www.eset.com/...competition.php

(data from VB100, a noted tester of antivirus products IN COMPETITION)

&

the folks @ av-comparatives (latest test data from NOV. 2007):

http://www.av-compar...sse_2007_11.php

Generally tend to NOT make a liar out of me... despite my BOLD statements above (because it is TOUGH to determine an "all-around best" in anything, imo!)

:)

* Last time I looked? NOD32 excelled on BOTH tests for speed, accuracy, & especially in HEURISTICS (missing NONE ever, afaik, on unknown or NEW virus')...

There are many good free ones like Avira, Avast and AVG to name three. I'm currently using NOD32 which is good but needs a subscription. If I were you, I'd try one of these listed. All work with Vista.

In addition to the mentioned virus programs, I also recommend a Microsoft product which does virus scanning, plus has maintenance features. You can download an evaluation version here:

Windows Live OneCare Evaluation

I use Avira, it's excellent and with the heuristic settings at medium it pops up warnings of viruses instantly. It also has a low cpu/memory foot print, so all the better really :).

I have been using AVG for years, but recently I am considering Norton Internet Security 2008.

Nick.

I know I'm probably very alone in my opinion here.
I have been using a Norton product since the early days of the Internet and have always been protected well

I use Norton 360 now and although I'm hard pressed to find anything that slows my system down this one's nice.
All the reviews from all the reputable magazine sites rate it very well in all categories.

Especially in

- Not being a system hog
- Simplicity of use
- Spy-ware protection and removal
- Virus removal and protection
- Intelligent task scheduling
- 3 system license use for one small price

to name a few

- the one bad point it does not work well with Firefox

Net

Symantec is a bad company. I would advise staying away from them.

However, AVG Free Edition is a really great anti-virus program.

I spend a little and get all evilware protection in one--on one 32 bit I use Bit Defender, and on the other I use Spyware Doctor. I also use Threatfire and Zonealarm free on my 32-bit machines.
