I used Norton Internet Security for 3 years now, its as good as anti virus/firewall software comes in my opinion. Basically I have Windows Defender and Firewall turned off. There is absolutely no configuration needed for Norton.

It also detects phishing etc. sites very well. I use computer / internet / news servers / email 10 hours a day, and never had one virus problem in my computer. Ofc, most important thing regarding viruses/malware is some knowledge of them and common sense, not opening suspicious files in the first place etc.

You might check out the new Kaspersky 2009 Internet Security. Much improved. Good performance, fairly low overhead. Now has a firewall on par with the best. IMO.

Personally I like NOD32 never had a virus once while using it, but that may just be me being careful. I hate Norton with a passion :realmad:

Well yesterday i just got rid of crappy Windows Live 1care, which we had for a year, but what has windows live 1care done for a whole year?NOTHING.One worthless piece of crap that just sits on your computer and sucks ram, with 2 hour scans that are completely a waste of time and with most of its "features" are already included in Windows Vista, so what benefit did i get from this software?NONE, this is a rip off.

But yesterday we went to staples and found CA anti-virus and anti-spyware, which i saw was highly rated on 1 website i saw, and then looking at the selection, the anti-virus and anti-spyware package edition was only $39.99, and had a $40 rebate!

Before i installed it, i did 1 last scan with windows live 1care, after waiting forever it said there is nothing on my computer, and did one with windows defender just for the heck of it too and it found nothing. After i removed it and installed ca, literaly 15 secs into the ca scan it already picked up 3 threats.and what have windows defender and windows live 1care have found in 2 hours and 10 mins total????NOTHING.Now i just feel sorry for the people who are still with 1care getting ripped of by microsoft and trying to wonder why they are having issues with their credit card or a complete system slowdown, and all 1care does is make is make a report saying there are new files ready for backup *shrug*

But i guess im satisfied with ca.

Come on, Windows Live OneCare isn't that bad! I use it all the time and find it unintrusive and is really all I need. It doesn't scream at me that it's ready for updates, it does everything automatically and actually helps my laptop run better.

I have a problem of late with AVG8 (free) running my CPU at 100% and locking my system up. Starts auto scan.

Posted this on the AVG anti-virus forum.

[Question]
My Auto Scan Scheduler runs AVG8 in the background and of late has been at 100% CPU set to mid position.

All of a sudden everything freezes on my PC, internet, everything, and I know where to look - turn off AVG.

I cannot do a scan anymore. Have let it run when not at the PC, but after 2 or more hours it's still going.

Have used 86 GB of a 200 GB HD.

It is a very sloooow scanning product and hogs 100% so no work can be done. Even setting the slider to low it still take 55-75%.

-----
MS Vista Home Premium service pack 1
AVG 8.0.169 free
avg 7.5 uninstalled
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, Windows Defender
Process Explorer: CPU 100%

Runs CPU 100% on or off the internet.

[Answer]
Check for a corrupted or incomplete installation...

Disable Windows Defender... disable the Vista UAC and restart...

1. Download the latest AVG Free installation package from [free.grisoft.com]
2. Run the AVG Free install file
3. Choose the Uninstall option and follow the setup wizard, when you get to the part to remove user settings, select it.
4. Restart your computer then...
5. Now reinstall AVG using the setup file you got in step 1 and update it.

Restart the system twice before you re-enable anything disabled earlier.

This seems like an awful lot of trouble to go through just to 'hopefully' fix this problem. I have been a faithfull AVG user through many versions with no real problems. This time I may see what else is available to try. I have to uninstall it anyway according to them.  :(

Because AVG8 was going crazy I uninstalled it and went looking for a new anti virus program. Tried a few and uninstalled them before settling on Avast! However, must have got hit by a drive-by in the meantime. Could not connect to ANY anti-virus program site. Win Defender, Spybot, Ad-aware, etc, no use... Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware did the job - killed the nasties...

Because anti-virus and malware, spyware is becoming more blurred now, you need to have a combo. (Just one anti-virus though)

You need to use avgremover.exe besides the uninstall, as it may leave some crap behind.

*You can do a Google for any of the product mentioned here.

Antivir Avira is the best out there, idc who evryone else says.. :P

November 2007 McAfee AV, Norton AV & Avira AV stood together on the #1 spot; according to TechNewsWorld.
- Norton had the heaviest engine and a medium sized library;
- McAfee had the smallest library and medium sized engine;
- Avira had the lightest engine and biggest library.

McAfee & Avira both have a Heuristic scan engine included aswell. So they pick up threads even when they're not fully known.
Free-av a.k.a. Avira Antivir Personal Edition is a free edition of Avira AV with out some more advanced options, so my choice as a gamer remains the lightfooted Avira Avtivir PE.
