Go to Control Panel, Classic View, Power Options and change the "plan settings" for which ever one you are using. When you click that there should be a slider thing to change the screen brightness for battery and ac.

This option isn't available to me. See below for actual screenshot of what happens when I press Windows+X..

The following page seems to say what I need to do..

But when I press windows+x it brings up the following..

So where on Earth are my settings to do this?!

Also - I did try searching this forum, but the results were just too big for me to search every thread it directed me to.

Thanks in advance :)

u might also want to try FN+F8 but this only makes the brightness the dimest or the brightest possible...

I've got the same problem, but Fn+arrow doesn't work.
It used to work though, when I plugged out the power cord, it would automatically dim the screen.
I've got an Dell Inspirion 1501 btw

Jiazzz - Your issue is being caused by the "Power Saving" feature. All laptops (that I know of) behave in this manner by default.

you can change this by going into control panel and starting "Power Options" and you'll know what to do from there.

Also on Dell's it's the Fn + UP arrow (Makes it brighter) or DOWN arrow (Makes it dimmer)

I already tried looking everywhere, I can't adjust the brightness anywhere.
The Fn+up/down won't work, you do see the gage, saying how bright the display is, but it doesn't change, it'll stay the brightest setting there is.
And it doesn't explain why it doesn't automatically dim anymore after unplugging the power cord.

Hmmm...I'm at work now...when I get home to my Dell desktop I'll check it out and tell you step by step how to find out why it doesnt automatically dim after unplugging the power cord. I'll also provide a screen shot.

Then again, maybe you know how it should be done, and are trying to do it but somehow cannot.

re-install vista and download all the drivers from the dell website without installing anything else first.

Ah, I've solved it. It seems the driver of my monitor somehow uninstalled or something.
