I have had similar problems with Sound running build 5472.

I have a Gigabyte board with on board Realtek/Intel HD audio.

I tracked down the jitter problem to a bad block on one of my discs. It appears Vista doesn't like bad blocks very much and endessly thrashes any affected hard disc. I appreciate this is a fault with the disc but by comparison this drive has operated flawlessly in XP for over a year.

I still continue to suffer from poor quality sound with clipping and popping of all audio. Its difficult as with all Beta testing to ascertainw whether this is the OS or the drivers. I have tried both the bulit in Vista drivers, the XP drivers provided by Gigabyte and both the XP and Vista beta drivers offered by Realtek who actuallt manufactuer the clip. No improvements.

I have this problem too. I also have a AC97, could have something to do with it?

I installed beta 2 and had no problem. When RC1 installed it worked great, except the sound was not installed. Then I used windows update and I got the problem, it installed of all things AC97 driver.

What is Ata Channel 0 and ata channel 1?

I updated the IDE and SATA from the website and did not get any increase. I think the SATA works fine, but my vista is installed on a 20gb IDE drive which is probably means the IDE drivers are causing the problem right?

I figured out that ATA Channel 0 and 1 are my HDDs and CD|DVD Drives, so thats not it. Gigabyte is my harddrive producer and the updated IDE drivers did not seem to help. I do have an older motherboard and planed to get one to use a Core 2 Duo 2, but I heard the Quads are around the corner. I'm assuming a newer motherboard would fix the problem, or maybe even a new PCI IDE Controller.

I had the sound stuttering problem also, too scared to mess with the sata drivers I took matters into my own hands. After updating my realtek drivers from the realtek site, I was upset over the fact that the stuttering was still just as bad as before.

So after a few hours of trying to reach my listening nirvana from my massive flac collection I got tired of it and just started trying everything I could and I have found the solution.

I went back under device managar clicked on my realtek ac97 soundcard and let windows look online for the driver.

Then I installed foobar2k http://www.foobar2000.com/ and then I installed the Kernel Streaming support component http://www.foobar200.../foo_out_ks.zip

For those that doesent know how to set all of this up;
Put the component from the above link in the Program Files\foobar2000\components folder

Now load up foobar and select file then prefrences then you select the - beside playback select output and select KS : "your sound card"

Now I have flawless playback no skipping stuttering noting.

I really dont know if this will help others it worked for my onboard realtek ac97 soundcard

Running Windows Update and checking the maker's website is probably your best bet. :(

Thanks for the info guys.

I was getting the skipping with my RealTek ALC655 on an MSI 6702 Mobo even after updating the audio drivers to the new Vista Beta drivers from RealTek. I was able to clear some minor issues with the driver upgrade, but MP3s would still skip.

I've now downgraded the driver for the on-board Via VT8237 SATA Controller and now there's no skipping in MS Media Player or Nero Media Player when playing MP3s. Excellent! :D

For those not having much success - check this wiki out http://www.iexbeta.c...patibility_List

It is for the Windows Vista RC 1 Hardware Compatibility List from leXwiki.

If you have anything to add to the list - just create a username and begin editing.

I also have the exact same problem and it driving me nuts, after I installed Windows Vista it told me that my Realtek audio driver was not compatible with current operating system. Does anyone know if realtek has released a vista compatible driver yet?

Using conexant AC97 on a HP zv6000.

The popping/static sounds that you hear during music playback are not just in music... they are also in windows sounds and anything else you hear on vista.

Also, what you probably don't realize either, is that your sound is quieter than WindowsXP for example. The sound is also muffled somewhat and is very degraded.

You can check this by playing a Divx or Xvid video on WinXP and then trying it on Vista. You'll notice a world of difference.

Also... I get some failed shutdowns. And on bootup, I don't know what it is, but many times it crashes during the loadbar phase, thus forcing me to "revert to a point that actually works" via F8.

I would expect these problems to start going away at the official launch at the end of January, but it would be nice if we saw it a lot sooner.

Vista = WinXP + Aero - sound =/

Install NForce beta vista driver ....

Hey RW did the beta nforce drivers help you? I have choppy sound in games. I'm also worried about my overall gaming performance. I have a Athlon 64 3200, 2 gigs of ram, Geforce 7900GT and on XP I get 75 fps all the time in WoW and on Vista it drops to 30 to 40.

B: I can't install the nforce XP drivers. why is it some of you can?

Hello! I think I have found the solution for the skipping problem. At least, for the HP zv6000 (of which I own).

First off, I tried installing all of those other drivers, including Realtek, blah blah.
I also tried searching for alternative ATA drivers. However, HP did not support my laptop's drivers for Vista.

Instead, I flashed a new version of BIOS to my motherboard!

For those with the HP zv6000, here is the file:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub...000/sp33698.exe

I hope this works for someone. It worked for me!

I had a bit of a problem trying that with my zv6000. As a matter of fact, a big one:
after updating my BIOS, while the sound was fine, but my keyboard was all screwed up!! Letters from the middle to the right side wouldn't work, or would type the wrong thing (k=i; Pause key = 8 and some other crazy things!).
After trying everything to fix it, only one thing worked: reinstalling the old BIOS.
So, my first warning is: be VERY careful when installing this new BIOS. It's no fun not having a functional keyboard!

As for the sound: although HP does not recommend upgrading zv6000s to Vista, I gave it a shot and chatted with their tech people online. And in five minutes, the problem seems to be solved! Here's what she told me to do:
- Go to the Device Manager (Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager)
- Once there, look for the plus sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
- In there, you should see both ATA Channel 0 and ATA Channel 1 (nevermind other things in there)
- Right click on ATA Channel 1, and select Uninstall.
- Right click on ATA Channel 0, and also select Uninstall.

It may take a couple reboots during the process. Also, I'm pretty sure you need to make sure you're online all through the process.
You'll notice windows reinstalling the drivers by itself. In my case, once the installation was completed, the sound was working, and no more static at all!

Well, good luck to y'all!
Dp.

Hello

New here, Also have been having audio stutter problems in Vista with my zx6000 with coxenant drivers. Searched everywhere and tried MANY different suggested solutions but to no avail. Yesterday stumbled onto at least a temp solution for mine. Change the power option from balanced to high performance (even on the fly) and the sound works perfectly with all sources (streaming online, cd's, mp3s, WMP 11, etc). Works with AC & battery, when using battery power the battery won't last as long, but at least the sound works now.

Well, this is an old thread going back to RC1, obviously...but it describes the problems I am having perfectly. I am running Vista Business on a P5B-E, Core Duo, with an X-Fi ExtremeGamer sound card. All types of sound (yes, ALL, from flash to .mp3 to video to system sounds) jitter, slow down, and stutter roughly every 30 seconds to a minute, for .5 to 1.5 seconds. I have disabled onboard sound, which didn't help. I have switched around drivers for the X-Fi several times as well, which leads me to believe that it is not the problem. I am not running any kind of Raid, so the SATA driver suggestion earlier appears to be useless to me.

What can I do to address this problem? Anybody have any ideas? Thanks for reading.

I fixed the sound problem by deinstalling the wireless N network adapter. I reinstalled the wireless G adapter. and everything works

See my e-mail to linksys.

Two weeks ago I updated my home network with a new wireless N router and a wireless N USB adapter. After that I spent the last two weeks trying to fix the sound in VISTA. The sound in VISTA skipped became garbled every 10-15 second for about a second. It was impossible to listen to music wattch TV, play a DVD. I tried everything I could think of: reinstall the sound card driver, bougth 2 new sound cards!,
I refornatted the drive, reinstall Vista, made sure that all the driver were updated for Vista. Nothing worked. I even sent the PC to a thechnician, He could not find any problem with the sound!
Until last night, I disconnected and unistalled the wireless N USB network adapter. I got the soundback perfectly. this morning I reinstalled the previous wireless G network adaapter and every thing still work. As you can imagine I not exactly an happy customet, I'am out of more than 5 hundred dollars, I have useless equipment, and I spent part of the 2 weeks nights to fix something caused by your untested equipment. Will this problem be fix so I can a least use the hardware i bought from your company?

I can confirm that the Linksys WUSB300N was causing this problem with my computer as well. I know it's probably a driver problem but when I took the cover off the small black chip toward the bottom felt dangerously hot--they might be overheating on Vista systems.

Vista + WUSB300N do not mix.
