Okay, I know my problem is not unique, but apparently a working solution is.
Hours searching forums & multiple approaches have left me hopeless.
The symptom:
After a Vista Home Premium (x32) clean install on a brand new custom build PC...
With Realtek HD Audio drivers installed to access onboard sound, I am receiving the speaker icon with a 'Red X'
& a rollover message stating that "No Audio Output Device is Installed".

Here's the details:

OS: Windows Vista Home Premium x32 (build 6000)
Board: Intel Corporation DG33BU (w/ onboard Intel® High Definition Audio 6-channel (5.1) Audio subsystem using the Realtek ALC888* Audio codec
CPU: 2.40 gigahertz Intel Core2 Quad Q6600
(I'm pretty confident in all hardware compatibility...very well researched & reviewed)

What I've done: (everything)

1) Downloaded latest motherboard drivers from Intel & installed one by one.

2) Uninstalled Audio drivers in Device Manager, restarted & allowed Vista to auto-detect & reinstall Audio drivers...problem persists!

3) Uninstalled Audio drivers in Device Manager, downloaded latest Vista drivers from Realtek, installed new drivers w/downloaded "Vista_R176.exe" file.

4) Installed microsoft patches KB929685 & KB937077 using DOS commands to extract & install the .CAB files (this method was found here) because a normal install attempt persistently assured me that
"Only Vista/Vista x64 is supported in this driver package." These patches were apparently to help restore Audio driver functions after resuming from a hibernation.
Then I put the computer to sleep & restarted it...problem persists!

5) Uninstalled Audio drivers & chipset drivers. Reinstalled chipset drivers, restarted, then reinstalled Audio drivers...problem persists!

6) Cried & begged my new PC build with Vista Premium to cooperate & make sweet music.

Please, any solutions are welcomed!

Might want try removing and installing the drivers while in safe mode.

Realtek has newer drivers available: version R177 for HD Audio dated Sept 17.

Try this methode: Uninstall the soundchip in Device Manager, make sure you also tick "Uninstall the driver software for this device'' option. Restart de PC and cancel the New Hardware wizard. Now install the drivers.

i am having the same audio problems, except my sound card is from SigmaTel

ok, removing and installing drivers (and the device) in safe mode... i have been told to try this before, but i hadnt done it. how do i put my computer in safe mode (besides making it crash, or shutting of the hard-drives using the power button on the front of my computer)?

ah nevermind, by the time that I get a reply, i will have figured it out.

edit: tried it. didnt work

Hi i have a dell 1501 laptop with Vista Premium. I'm not computer savvy but I'm learning a thing or two. I had the same problem with my lap top reading (no audio device installed). Thanks to your site it helped me to investigate. I'll try to help you. My audio is working well, and I'm happy again. Step one is to go to control panel, and click on device manager. I know you did this already but bear with me for a minute. Look up Sound, video, and game controllers. Next click this (+) to see what kind of audio device you have, then right click it to open properties. Go to driver, and uninstall your device. Make sure you didn't uninstall your speakers, smile. Next step is to go to Programs, and features. Find your audio system and uninstall it with it's wizard. Next step is to close your programs, and restart. Windows Vista will restart your machine. Wait... A system wizard will appear and ask you if you want to install. I was going to cancel the wizard, and put in my drivers, and utilities disk, but before i could my narrator came on, and said hello Tony blah, blah, blat! I almostfell backward with joy. The wizard ran, and installed my original device completely, and my little circle with the (X) inside dissapeared. I stayed up for hours listening to my oldies but goodies.

Tony50's fix will solve the problem! SOUND AGAIN!

This fix below worked flawlessly! Here's my story... I had Vista home installed on my laptop, however, the functionality was not enough to do what I wanted (specifically installing IIS). So I bought the Vista business upgrade and installed it over my Vista home. Everything went perfectly until I notice that the install knocked out my sound configuration. Damn! I too was plagued with the "No Audio Output Device is Installed" rollover the sound icon. soooo... I found Tony50's fix and gave it a try.

I followed the fix listed below verbatim and the fix worked! Sound again! I guess the MS developers were on the job that day!

Thanks Tony

Did you check to see if your on board sound is enabled? On start up hit the key for set up, generally f1 or it will list it on the lower screen. Go into advanced and see what it says.

OP, apparently nothing is fixed for you yet. Not as good, but try uninstalling the Realtek, restarting, and using the audio driver that Vista will supply.

Navigate in regedit to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Audiosrv

What is entered against the key: DependOnService?

Hey everyone.
I'm having a similar problem.
I recently upgraded my RAM and for some reason my speakers have failed to be recognized on my PC since. I'm getting a icon in the System Tray saying "No Audio Output Device is installed". I've uninstalled/re-installed my Sound Card but no luck.

Any ideas?

i might not have the exact same problem, i have sound, but i cannot seem to find/be able to use the sound effects manager from realtek!!
i know i had it when i got my computer, a dell inspiron 531s desktop. nvidia card, amd dual core prossesor etc. i would like to be able to use this for the room correction, sound effects, and the like. i belive i have the alc888 system, but i went to dell's website and downloaded the drivers for the system, and now it no longer shows up in then device properties as a realtek driver, but rather a mirosoft driver. i'm not sure what to do, so any help is appericated. running vista home premium service pack one.

Hello tony50, thanks to you, my audio is working well now! Thank you soooooooo much! To whom it may concern, do use tony50's method, it's EFFECTIVE!!! :)

For HP Pavilion dv6000:
Go to control panel
Go to device manager
Go to sound, video and game controllers
CLICK: Conexant High Definition Audio
CLICK: “Driver” in the catalogued folders at top of window
CLICK: “Update Driver…”
CLICK: “Search automatically for updated driver software” in the Windows pop-up

that's all i had to do lol

It worked for me, I have conexant high definition audio, to go to control panel-hardware and sound-device manager-hit the (+) sign for sound video and game controllers-right click on your Audio and go to properties and hit update driver under the driver tab. Looks like that won't work for everyone but since it fixed mine I figured I'd share, thanks to Tony 50 for his pointers that helped me in the right direction
