Okay, so I got a new computer, it's a Toshiba Satellite and it comes with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 graphics card. Then I decided to try and run Starcraft on it, and everytime I do no matter what compatibility mode I run it under I get the following "Direct Draw Error":

"Starcraft was unable to switch video modes. To correct this problem, please set Desktop Area to 640x480 and Color Palette to 256 colors and try running Starcraft again. [then it tells you how to set the desktop area and color palette for Win 95 and NT] If your video card does not support 256 color mode, you will need to instll the most recent DirectX video drivers for your video card [obviously my drivers are up to date] The error encountered while trying to switch video modes was:
Not implemented
vidinimo_PC.cpp line 160
SetDisplayMode"

Needless to say, my computer - except under "compatibility" for individual programs - does/can not run/set to be run at a desktop area of 640x480, and my color mode option is only 16-bit or 32-bit.

So what do I do?

Hi I am not sure if this game is compatible with Vista but I would try updating Direct X again and reinstall the game again and make sure you have the latest graphics driver.

I did find on another forum when I searched and found nothing to say it won't work on Vista but I did find people were having problems, the official game requirements are not very demanding so I don't think you should have a problem.

But try running in compatibility as NT/2000 or consider dual boot and play this game in XP

Windows 95/98/NT
Pentium 90 or higher
16 MB RAM
DirectX-Compatible SVGA Video Card
Microsoft-Compatible Mouse
Double-Speed CD-ROM
(Quad Speed for Cinematics)

That didn't help me.

Also, the various "compatibility modes" when you right-click on the tab don't help...

And Yes, my drivers are updated for the graphics card and DirectX

the problem is that my graphics card is way d*** to powerful for the game and I can switch back over into the old 256 color or the 640x480
My graphics card specifically is:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600, with 256 external memory and about 1200 megs. internal...

Has anyone figured out a solution short of installing some foreign operating system?

I think you have the same toshiba as I do, or atleast one with the same graphics card.
A200-TH7?

anyhow, same issues as reported here, at the very least we should be able to run this in a window or something with vista (it can be done with world of warcraft (newer game but still...)

i will attach the usual error message i get when i try to run starcraft.

Hi everyone,

Yesterday, I had this problem... But found the solution !!
Graphics card ATI radeon was the problem, this card is too powerful ! It does'nt load low screen resolutions. So should enter into the config panel :
click "peripherics"
click "graphic card"
doble click "ATI radeon ..."
click "driver updating"
and choose "VGA standard and not ATI Radeon..."
and finally reboot !

VGA will run the 256 colors palette with 640x480 screen resolution (it's necessary to modify)... and Starcraft will run !!!!!
B)

Bye
