Sadly this fix does NOT work in Vista 64 Bit, the keys must be elsewhere in 64-bit, worth looking into providing a fix for both 32 and 64 bit editions.

This little program however DOES seem to work perfectly.

It's a disgrace that after 2 years of Vista being a commercial product Microsoft still has not been able to fix this simplest annoyance, yet they continue with developing Windows 7 and just ignore those people that spent money on Vista. All editions of Windows ever created have been able to remember window positions.

IT DOES WORK on Vista 64, I'm on Ultimate and it has worked be is Pre SP1 or SP1 or SP2 Beta.

Resizing Windows is not this FIX's or my Primary concern, its icons going wrong and folders getting totally confused.

And XP did not remember Folder Sizes all the time, there were a few tricks to get it to do so and all without 3rd Party App's.

Hi Jhuk, my apologies, yes your fix DOES WORK on Vista 64, I mistakenly thought that remembering window sizes and positions was part of your fix but clearly that's not the case. I tested this morning and all my folders are in the default "all items" format which is great. That was another major annoyance of Vista for me. Your fix along with the link to the Autosizer program I posted make a great combo for keeping Vista from losing it's memory. Thanks for your work on this fix.

Steve,
Just wanted to say thanks from me as well.
Not only was it a fix, you explained why in a very clear way.

Cheers,
Ron Francis

i used the registry hack to correct the folder view setting and all went well, i do however have a small issue i would like to resolve.

all my favorites and also desktop shortcuts open half screen and have to be maximized, they should open full screen, my other PC with vista also opens full screen, can this be corrected ?

Close browser, start ie7 by the icon in taskbar or in start menu.
Drag sides to edge or where you wish.
Close browser.
Your favs will now open that size.

Thanks for the fix Steve, fixed my vistax64 ultimate to the T!

Thanks for fixing one of the biggest annoyances in Vista! It was a plague on XP already...
It's a tell tale sign that MS can't fix one simple thing that plagues ALL Vista users daily. Their biggest problem is that they just don't know how much they suck.

I have one additional question: what template is applied to new folders? It seems any new folder gets the 'All Items' template, even when I create a subfolder in a folder that's set to 'Pictures and Video'?

Hi guys

This was very helpful !! BUT :) I have one thing that bothers me very much. I would like that windows would remember the window size of my explorer, that vas previously opened. Almost each time windows "resets" the size of explorer that was opened. In XP the size was always the same….

Thanks

D.

Try holding down shift when you close the explorer window. Mine usually saves the previous setting but not always, especially if you have more than one window open

Superb tip. Everytime I open a new explorer window Vista HP always decided the folder size on the screen. I'm more than happy just to press shift rather than arse about changing the screen size of each folder. Thanks Steve. Tidy.

Perhaps no one is following this topic any more. Thought I'd give it a try.

I've had my Vista laptop for about 1 year, and have arrived at the point
of frustration over the "remember folder options" issur where I was ready
to try anything.

I found this thread, downloaded and tried Stephen's reg edit. It was a
noble effort Stephen, but it did't work.

I just wondered if anyone who has been following this thread, and for whom
Stephen's reg edit did not work, has gone on to find a fix that did work for
them.

Given the frequency with which MS issues updates, and the relative ease with
which MS engineers could solve this tiny problem, I'm surprised the fix isn't
downloaded with any of the dozens of updates I've installed in the past year.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks, Tim
