Hello ,

I am a new user to this forum B) . Could some one please help with my Vista problem.

When I login to windows vista , the "Starting System Events Notificaion Service " message is shown and the system hangs.
Then by logging off and logging in I am able to reach the desktop after a delay of 2-3 minutes which is more than the usual time
for me.

As soon as desktop is loaded , I get a error saying that winsock.dll cannot be loaded. A taskbar pop comes up asing me to check system event log for errors. I'm not knowledgable enought to verify that.

Also the NIC/ network card is disabled saying tat some particular service is not available.

Windows help also does not load. :realmad:

All these problems occured simultaneously.

I tried running system file checker with SCANNOW option and it came up clean.

I have disabled system restore so that is not an option for me.

System Specs :

Vista Ultimate SP1 + Updates
Core 2 Duo 2.4 ghz
2 Gb DDR 2
160 Gb SATA
Intel DG35EC MoBo

Thank you ! :)

Welcome to TVF.

The event log can be accessed by going to Start and typing Event Viewer in the Search field.

In view of the number of problems you've got and that the fact they appeared out of the blue suggests you've been hit by a virus.

Try a full virus scan: AdAware, SpyBot, CCleaner and MalwareBytes are all very good (Google is your friend here).

Do you have a Vista DVD?

If so, you might want to consider booting into it and use Drive Options (Advanced) to format the system drive and re-install Vista.

Of course, it goes without saying you'll need to backup all your personal data first and make sure you have all the drivers you need.

Also, as you've discovered, is it worth disabling system restore if you don't have an alternative in place?

Acronis True Image is a great backup utility. It allows you to create an image of your hard drive and back it up to another drive.

In the event of major problems you then just restore the backed up image.

@ swan vista

Thank you for the suggestions. I ended up re-installing vista.

I'm pretty sure its not a virus, I keep all security stuff uptodate, so I am wondering if anybody could tell me how this problem may have have occured.

Good housekeeping, good security and keeping away from porn sites and the like will mitigate the hackers and nasty people, but unfortunately it is difficult to keep them all at bay.

Of course, it is possible one or other of your system files were corrupted in some way.

Anyway, pleased to hear you've been able to resolve your problem.
