Okay, for those of you that play games on the internet let me try to explain it this way.
Anyone familiar with seeing a Ping of 9999 when connecting to play your game?
I see it all the time in my game favorites and it takes forever to download servers.
In fact I run a server and I no one can see it in there server browser.
My server is just not getting through my firewall I guess.
But I have everything unblocked...
Anyone else have this problem or know of an answer?
Thanks...

What kind of server? What port does it use? What games are you playing that you see a high latency in?

I run a server for UT99...an old game but it has a following.
Ports are many...7757, 7777, 27900, 8081.

And it's one of those things, if I highlight the server which shows a ping of 9999, after about
20 sec the real ping appears....then I can play.
But there is also a master listing of games/servers...and my server does not appear in the
list...even though I am up and running. It's just not being advertised.
And when I run my server on my other PC that uses XP I have no problem.
THe server appears and everything is fast.
So there is something with Vista that is blocking my server from the internet.
I am pretty sure I have everything unblocked in my firewall.

Don't worry about the ping being that high - it's most likely the game is trying to work out the actual ping, and just displays 9999 until it does.

Other games do it too - CS:Source does the same thing for me - it sits at 999 for about a second or two, then drops down to 30-120 or so depending on the server. ;)

As for the firewall issue...what firewall are you using?

Some servers also mask the ping, for example some CoD4 servers I've been on mask everyones ping to 999.

As for the Ping being 9999 I can understand it trying to work it's way out...I can live with that.
It's not being able to see or have my server advertised over the internet.
We have 2 computers in the house...a Vista and XP both going through the
same router. It I run my server/game on my XP it works prefectly.
It's only when I use the Vista computer that I have this problem.
Here is what is protecting my PC
...Windows Firewall
...I'm running through a Linksys router

Hm. Obvious question, but have you forwarded the necessary ports to only one PC? Because if so, it won't work. You'll need to change the ports to the other PC if you want it to act as a server, unless you assign them different ports, but that's a whole 'nother topic which is quite complex. >_<

Would the network and sharing center settings have anything to do or help with my problem?
