Hi,

my laptop is a HP DV3 2010TX. It's important specs are vista home premium 32 bit SP1, 320GB HD (about 5GB used up), 2048 MB DDR2 SDRAM (1 dimm), nVidia GeForce G105M with 512 MB DDR2, Intel core 2 duo P8600 (2.4GHz) and 4GB ram.

Thanks

Hey gust,

It should be able to handle most games alright; what are you looking to play? If it's something like Crysis or Call of Duty then you'll have to turn the settings down.

No problem. I've played the Orange Box on a laptop with a slower processor and much weaker graphics card; it ran fine on medium settings for me. I also played Fallout 3 on it with all the settings turned down to the lowest - wasn't pretty, but it did the job. And that was only until I got back to school where my desktop was :D

Looks like a very powerful laptop. I doubt you'll have an issue with any games currently on the market.

It'll do perfectly for most games.

This will tell you exactly how well your laptop will run most games currently available.

the video card is gonna be the big limiter. It is basically a GeForce 9300, which is by no means a lightning rod. expect to be able to run crysis only on low settings, cod4 on low. here is a good review for that card...

http://www.notebookc...5M.13790.0.html

This is what notebookcheck says it will do.

Game Performance

The following values are based on the 9300M GS card with 256MB GDDR2 and a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo. The GeForce G105M is basically just a higher clocked 9300M GS and therefore these gaming performance figures should also be valid for the G 105M (the 105M should be slightly faster).

Supreme Commander: 1024x768, low: 15-30 fps - > playable (Skirmish 1vs1)
Fifa 2009: 1024x768, high: 10-40 fps -> playable, replays stutter
Spore: 1024x768, med -> playable
Crysis Warhead: 800x600, low: 33 fps -> playable
World in Conflict: 800x600, low: 66 fps -> smooth playable (Benchmark, game also playable in higher settings)
Half Life 2 - Lost Coast: 1024x768, high: 60 fps -> smooth playable
Far Cry 2: 640x480, low: 20 fps -> barely playable

Coral Reef HD 1080p video: 22% CPU -> stutter free playback

Gust, Video cards are not only made for games. They are used for videos, CAD (computer animated design) and a lot of other things. Your laptop is at higher end of laptops but cannot compare to a high end desktop. For serious gaming I would always recommend a desktop with a powerful CPU (at least 3.x GHz duo core), a high end graphics card (bad part is they cost $500 and more) and a big 22" or 24" fast screen. But as the others said, with some restrictions, you should be OK.

There are 'gaming' laptops which can play games at an OK level, sometimes on high, but you wont be able to compare to a desktop, at least not for some time.

I have a "gaming laptop" I bought it a year ago. features a 1.8 ghz core 2 duo (which I am upgrading to a T9300 soon) 4gb memory and an 8800GTS graphics card with 512 MB GDDR3 mem.

I can play any game out there. Crysis warhead at high, no AA. COD4 at high, 4x AA. Battlefield 2 at max, max AA.

The point is, you have to get a gaming laptop with a good video card. but desktops are the way to go for a good gamer. My one year old laptop is already seeming insuficient with some games coming out. by next year, I will probably need a new one with better specs to handle the new games.
