So yeah, I'm sure everyone's pumped for the game as much as I am.

..And I'm sure a good handful of us know about the server issues with the game coming out; how IW is instituting matchmaking by the means of "IWNET", which will eliminate servers from CoD. If not, check it out here:

http://www.fourzerotwo.com/?p=745

My viewpoint on it? Ridiculous. If I want a console experience, I'll buy it on the console. I pay for the PC version to play on servers, with a usual crowd so to speak.

Thoughts?

Oh yeah, no doubt the single player will be another awesome experience this time around; they've not let any details out of the bag at all. It should be a great campaign.

Just this multiplayer fiasco, disappointing.

I won't be buying it until they implement dedicated servers for the PC version.

There are tons of petitions all over the net to the same effect.
Tons of cancelled pre-orders from Amazon and other retailers.
They really have messed up royally.

You do know you must use Steam to play it? They aren't using Punkbuster anymore, it's gonna be protected by Valve's VAC (Valve Anti Cheat). This is fine for Valve's games but how is it going to work on someone else's?

Plus no dedicated servers means no mods, no dedicated servers means no playable clan matches, no dedicated servers (plus no modding/mapping tools being released...WTF???) means no custom maps.

16 player limit too? Bang goes the 64 player battle royals we used to have on our PC.

Infinity Ward and Activision just killed Call of Duty on the PC forever, good job. That's probably what they want tho, then they don't have to concentrate on porting games to the PC, they just need to make piss poor console games.

There's so many disappointed PC gamers who know that Call of Duty was born on the PC and now it's died on the PC. All due to lazy programming and greed.

A quote, allegedly from an IW developer :

Quote

IW_Scriptacus wrote:
The following applies to Playlists:

- the map: Not directly, though you can vote to skip maps that you dislike. Additionaly, we can update the playlists based on player feedback. (e.g. if people dislike playing Highrise in SD, we can remove it)
- the min players: Each playlist has a minimum and a maximum number of players.
- friendly fire: Also a per playlist setting; hardcore playlists tend to have FF enabled.
- weapons: All weapons are available at all times in all playlists.

To clarify; a Playlist is a set of gametypes, maps and rules (player count, health, friendly fire, gametype, bomb timers, score limit, etc...). So we make the "Search and Destroy" playlist. It's regular SD, 12-16 players, no respawns, etc... Then we can also make a "Hardcore Search and Destroy" playlist. It's SD, 12-16 players, no hud, low health, etc... But we can also make a "Hardcore Team Tactical" playlist. It's got all the standard hardcore rules, but it's 6-12 players, has smaller maps, and the gametypes might be Hardore SD, Elimination TDM, etc...
All of this is stuff we can update very easily.

Private Match:
Pick any map, gametype, and rules that you want. Play with as many or as few people as you want (up to the max limit). People can join in progress as they please. You can't disable specific weapons, but it's your server and if someone isn't playing by your rules you can boot them.

There's also the possibility this will be expanded upon in future patches. (I can't promise this of course, cause that's not my call to make)

And on that note, try to keep in mind that we're not just throwing this whole system out there and then washing our hands of it. We will be watching, playing and evaluating what works and what doesn't. The nice thing about PC vs the other platforms is that it's a lot easier to patch after we ship.

Sorry, but no dedi servers = no sale.

Just found this out too :

Quote

Activision will take over Leicester Square on Monday 9th November to launch what could be the biggest game ever, Modern Warfare 2.

The ODEON cinema will host a screening of the game compered by "a celebrity fan". Could this be the return of Ian Wright, Ricky Hatton, Pat Cash and Nell McAndrew - "The Pastel Pack"?

Then, at midnight, the doors to HMV Trocadero will swing open and sales will begin. A secret VIP party in an underground bunker will also begin, starring "one of the UK's biggest male artists of 2009". Is it Dizzee Rascal? Michael Buble? Leon from last year's X-Factor?

Modern Warfare 2 goes on sale worldwide on Tuesday 10th November. That gives the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 game nearly a whole week to amass top-notch figures. Not long now.

Don't forget that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for Wii and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Moblized for DS launch on the same day. They're obviously different.

Yeh it is the dumbest thing they could do to the game. Somehow I doubt they care about the PC platform anymore...

Wait, what? No custom maps? I'm sortof fine with them if they want to have their own dedicated servers, but no custom maps is just stupid.

It's a pity that all the effort is going into the consoles, simply because they can make more money that way. What happened to the days when the PC version was a superb masterpiece? (N)

All I see is that Its another way to make you pay for DLC. No dedicated servers No Sale I have just cancelled my pre order from Amazon. I will stick with COD4. This will cost Infinityward dearly for me.

On the VAC/Steam bit, i'm disappointed in that. While I have no problem with Steam, I'd prefer to run the game without having Steam run in the background because I'll already have Xfire running anway; just more system resources that will be taken up. :|

And I don't know what the point of switching to VAC was. I'm sure it's great, but I didn't know CoD4 had a massive problem with hackers with Punkbuster... I prefer PB personally, but that's just the seasoned CoD PC vet in me talking.

It's really sad how they're gonna destroy this franchise on the PC. I was so pumped for the game, but I mean, I'm wondering if it's even worth the money anymore...

I will not buy it until the server issue is taken care of. I saw a price of $59.99 USD for this game...too much for a single player game. None of my clanmates are buying it either...Be sure to sign the online petition. http://www.petitiono...e.com/dedis4mw/

Modern Warefare made around $7M on map packs for World At War on consoles. Dedicated servers and modding would allow users to create maps that were designed for consoles onto PCs, for free. The PC version doesn't make as much money as the console versions. So, killing the dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 2's PC version is a brilliant move on Activision's part. Although, it sucks for us.

I would say its a bad move...in the previous versions there were servers for consoles and allowed for dedicated servers for PC. They just got lazy IMO. I think its gonna cost them though. People are going to flock to other games like BF BC2 etc. I hate consoles...long live the PC.

I wont buy MW2 until the dedicated servers are implemented. Anyone who plays consoles knows one person can ruin the whole gaming experiance...

Sure they can. LOL, and when some little pissant is being annoying on XBOX Live. . . I just mute him\her ;) Either way, I'll be playing it on 360, so I'm not one to comment on the whole dedicated server thing, though I am on the gamers' side.

Yeah, I'll be playing it on the 360, but being a CoD4 veteran on the PC, I think it's a damn shame that IW is removing dedicated servers. They stand to loose a lot of money as far as the PC version is concerned, many people will probably just download a pirate copy for the single player campaign, in fact, I know a clan who recommended to their members that it would be best to not buy MW2, and just pirate it if you really wanted to play the single player campaign.

On our private servers we can kick hackers, pissants, and anyone who doesn't follow the rules. Thats why they are nice. And from what I understand, a users computer will be picked to host, so the server will be limited to the cababilites of that pc. Not only that but if the host PC quits then the whole game is over. All in all its a pain the the butt. As for the pirating I know there are a few in my clan as well who arent willing to pay the high price for a single player game and will probly pirate it. I refuse to pirate anything, so, I just wont buy it, at least until the issue is fixed, or the price drops to about $20.

The game has a feature called Host Migration which, in the event that the host quits, it will automatically move the game to another host and carry on from where it left off. Not that this makes it any better of course. :)

But...if they're allowing that, why not just allow 3rd party dedicated servers? Fail, IW.
