Hi there

Running Vista Home Basic with AOL9.0 VR as ISP software through a Netgear Router. Fired up PC yesterday and installed new Windows Defender patch (KB915597, Definition(1.69.301.0). Rebooted and tried to access my AOL email account. Got connection failure message. Opened IE8 and did manage to access my browser page but the connection was very unstable, dropping out or failing to find the web pages.

Shut down PC and went back later in the day. Again got failure message for AOL connection. Tried IE8 and this time got zilch**!! - absolutely no access to the internet.

All was working fine on the previous evening so I was suspicious of the Defender update although previous updates of that same patch but with different definition suffixes had loaded with no problems.

Ran System Restore back to the pre-update status and rebooted. All fine - both AOL and IE8 working as they should???

Anyone out there know of this as a problem with AOL9.0 VR and Windows Defender. Historically Windows Defender has been set to perform an automatic scan once per day at 2am but I am also running Bitdefender Internet Security 2009 and wondered if there could be issues between those programmes which might have affected my AOL software.

Grateful for any comments or suggestions

Very weird.

Windows Defender updates usually only update detection files, nothing else, so it's really weird that would interfere with your connection. I'd say hold off until a new update comes out, then install it, might be some issue I'm not aware of. Are you sure you haven't made any other changes?

Hi Amon91

Definitely made no other changes at my end before loading the Defender update. However cannot be certain that AOL have not been messing about with my ISP connection. Will contact their Tech Support to see if they are aware of any compatibility issues with Windows Defender. Will also check if they have been fiddling with my settings at their end. However I'm not confident that they will own up anyway - just my old cynical devil rearing its head.

If I throw any more light on this issue I will post the result

Cheers

Hi there

Just to update all.

Bit the bullet today and installed the Windows Defender update KB915597 that appeared to cause my problems last week.

Installed earlier today and rebooted and everthing seems to be OK - AOL and IE8 both working fine.

I now suspect the AOL or British Telecom (provider of the broadband network to my home) may have been messing with their settings.

Have contacted AOL but as yet there has been no response

Hope all is now stable.

Cheers
