I'm using Windows Vista on a Toshiba Satellite laptop (had it for two and a half years roughly). Lately after I sign on, it goes to a light blue screen - not the BSOD - for about 20 seconds, then goes white (similar to after an emergency shutdown) for a while before my desktop loads. Sometimes (like most of yesterday), it doesn't do this at all; other times, it takes much longer to get past the blue screen. Is this an indication of a problem?

Welcome to the forums. Just in case try running a malware scan with Malwarebytes. Have you installed any software recently that could be causing the issue?

Welcome!

Just in-case something IS wrong, do you have a backup of all of your important documents and files?

Run sfc /scannow in elevated command prompt. Maybe there is a damaged system file. sfc may (or may not) fix it,

I have a Toshiba Satellite A-135 (June 2007) and I've never seen mine do that. It's a "guinea pig" machine so I put it through a living hell from a software point of view. I've had every version of Vista, Linux SuSE 9, 10 and 11, and Windows 7 on this thing, as well as almost any kind of software you can name, and it always boots like it should: Toshiba BIOS screen, UI boot screen, and the Windows logo before the desktop loads.

I'd say something definitely isn't working right. Whether it's software or hardware I couldn't guess.
