Pretty much every time I log on to Windows 7 the theme is Classic White and a pop-up appears saying "Failed to connect to the System Event Notification Service".

I have checked the service, which lists its Startup Type as 'Automatic'.

I have checked all of the system's drivers and they are all up-to-date and functioning.

I have booted in Safe Mode and there are no issues.

Occassionally if I make a change to the system, after restarting it will log on fine. For example, I reinstalled Firefox the other day and, after restarting, the system was fine.

But, as I write this, the system has failed to connect again.

I suffered from the same issue in Vista but not this frequently. To me it suggests driver issues but as mentioned all are up-to-date and functioning.

Has anybody else suffered from this? Does anyone have a solution?

May you need to check your graphic card?!

What's about the temperature of the GPU? Is the fan running well? What's about the driver?

I would to first check about the temperature or even test with a different graphic card. In case it works well with a different card check the "old" card in a different computer, may be by a friend etc. I would also uninstall the driver in the Device Manager and reboot and let Windows install it's own driver.

Some time ago I had such problem on the son's computer and there it were the graphic card. The computer started sometimes normal but most of the time with just black desktop. It was a ATI card and changed to a new but same model and all was fine.

Thanks for the suggestion.

The graphics card I'm running was not part of the original machine so could be the problem.

I will do as you suggested and let you know if it solves the problem.

Thanks again.

Another thing which happens sometimes is, after waking the machine up from sleep, the sound won't work and the system won't read anything plugged into the USB ports. The system will also occasionally BSOD after waking up.

I'm not sure what force the problem after restarting from Sleep mode?! May be it's more sufficient to use Hibernate mode instead of Sleep Mode! Just try and see it works or not.

I spent a bit of time uninstalling drivers etc from my machine and I think (fingers crossed) I have found the solution to the service issue.

It would appear to be that my printer drivers have been causing the problem. I'm not 100% sure but after removing everything to do with the printer from my system the service problem has not occurred since.

It is strange seen as I installed the specific Windows 7 drivers supplied by HP.

As for the Sleep issue thanks for the suggestion. I will try Hibernate and see how it goes.

I think though that the problem lies with my machine itself.

I will let you know if it solves the issue.

It turns out that it is not my printer drivers that are causing the problems.

I updated my audio driver the other day which triggerred the problem again.

I also looked at using Hibernate instead of Sleep but it looks like my system might not support it. All I appear to be able to do is enable or disable hybrid-sleep but that does not give me the option in Start to put my machine into Hibernate.

I have started a new topic on the subject as I believe I may have narrowed down the cause:
