My Dad picked up one of those XBOX 360 fans today for £2.99 - great deal since I think they're £15 new but is it worth using? They're great in the fact that they will no doubt prevent the infamous "Red Ring of Death" but it makes so much noise! I like a quite games console and have even gone to the length of installing MW2 to my HDD just to cut some of the noise... Does anyone else have one and what do you think?

Actually, if it is one of the Nyko brand fans, it will cause the rrod. For some reason that fan actually caused the machine to work too hard and the rest is history. At least that is what I read a couple years ago.

A lot of those fan add-on solutions actually impede air flow causing the system to overheat.

The difference in air flow intake is extremely different depending on if I have my wireless network adapter plugged in or not. And that is just a little add-on.

YES indeed!!!! Even more quiet when you install things to the hard drive.

But overall DeathMonkey you want to avoid the fans. The only time I even recommend a fan will be when your console is getting borderline hot. And the only fan to recommend is the latest Nyko fan. Those are the only ones GameStop carries for a reason, all of the other ones got horrible customer reviews and caused more problems than it solved. But take note if you red ring with a fan on it and tell them they will not honor the warranty. They will blame the fan for it no matter what and they have no reason, according to them, to fix a 360 that broke because of a third party accessory.

Just install games to the hard drive, which reduces activity thus reducing the heat it produces. On top of that it's really quiet too!

You just need to go to "game library" on the dashboard whilst the game is in the XBOX and then select and then select "install to HDD".

I'm just sayin... cause my COD4MW disk is bad. But one of my brothers has a working disk. If I could install it to my HDD I don't have to bother with buying the game again.

You still need to put the disc in to prove that you still own the game - so if yours is scratched beyond repair it won't work. If the 360 can still see it's (roughly) COD4MW though, it should be okay.

The disk loads but some levels crash the game. It's just looking at the disk for boot?

Most def c0lin! Just go to the game tile while you're on the dashboard and press Y. That will flip the tile over and you'll see the option to install. it takes about 5 minutes, but SO worth it! :D

I heard that installing to the HDD can cause problems. At least that is what I always read when I refereed for GameBattles.

I haven't had an issue with any of my titles - GTAIV, Crackdown, Forza 3, or Test Drive Unlimited. All work perfectly.

What it is, is that most games made before they enabled the installation, were optimized to play from disc. So when you install them, they load funny and don't work. This was a HUGE story when people first started trying to install Halo 3 on their HDD's. If you buy Halo 3 new today though, you won't have a problem.
