Installed Vista Home Premium
Installed Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142
2142 runs smooth a glass, BUT BF2 seems jerky when played online.
Tried everything nothing
Then I ran BF2 in XP SP2 compatibility mode and it now runs fine.
Hope this is of help to somebody

PS> To stop being booted by Punkbuster, you have to run BF2 and BF2142 in Admin mode

I too Just installed Vista Home Premium. I am having major problems with BF2. I just started playing it and was becoming addicted. keep getting kicked by Punkbuster. How do you set it up for XP compatability mode and how do you set it up to run in admiistrater mode? Really would appreciate the help.

To change compatibilty, right click on bf2 icon and choose compatibility and tick run in XP SP2 box
Goto Control Panel/Security
Change settings for Windows Firewall
Add BF2 to exceptions.

When you start game, right click on icon and choose run in administrator mode will stop you being booted by punkbuster

Hmm, thats weird you had to add BF2 to the Windows Firewall + run it in XP (SP2). I haven't had any problems with Comp. or WinFirewall :-/

Thank you very much! Appreciate all the help and the quick response. Still doesn't play as fast and smooth as it did on XP SP2 but I can live with it until everyone fixes thier software. AVG now has a new FREE version of virus software that works with Vista. Wish the rest of the software manufacturers would get with it.

I can get BF2 to load, but when i try to get into a game, it does the whole loading of the map, then verify or whatever it is, but it never gets past that point. I just installed vista today.

Have you installed all the latest BF2 version patches? Sounds to me like you might be trying to join a game server that is running a different version than the one you have installed.

That may not be the issue. If the game wasnt patched it wouldnt load the map at all but give an error saying wrong version.

Steveh522 make sure you right click on BF2 and choose 'Run as administrator' if that works good. Btw you can set it run as admin by default. Right click again and check around the properties tab youll find the option Im sure.

I just did a manual update on my punkbuster, and now I am able to get in. Guess that was the issue.

Set my account to admin mode and set bf2 to run in xp sp2 compatibility. Works well but is still not smooth. I read in a forum on bf2s that you could also:

1. Install BF2 by setting the install.exe to XP emulation.
2. Install BF2 patch 1.41 no changes needed.
3. Install BF2:SF by setting the install.exe to XP emulation.
4. Install BF2:EF no changes needed.
5. Install BF2:AF no changes needed.
6 Install BF2 patch 1.41 no changes needed.
7. Right click on shortcut > properties > click compatibility tab > check emulation for Windows XP > check "Run this program as an administrator." > Click Ok(Do this for both BF2 and BF2:SF!)
8. Play!!!
Quote from Brizzzer made on bf2s forum

Which way is better and is there anything that could help bf2 run smoother like it did on windows xp
Any help would be much appreciated

I just played it, other than getting com errors here and there, it played perfectly for me. The com issues, I am sure were part of my network, since I am playing wireless.

Hey there it looks like we're in the same boat. Other people run BF2 without a problem, I can't get it to get past maploads for the life of me. Tried running as admin, enabled Vista compatibility, updated Punkbuster and got the latest BF2 patch. In my opinion its a driver problem. What sound card do you use by the way? I have a X-Fi Platinum and thus far the drivers suck for it for Vista 64-bit. So...I don't know...I just hope it gets fixed some how.

Yeah a couple of points,

I have installed Battlefield 2 Deulux Edition (BF2 & BF2:SF) normally, with no run setup in XP SP2 emulation, and it crashes to the desktop every time!

What do I have to do to install in XP SP2 mode? Go onto the DVD and then run setup.exe in emulation or what?

Thanks in advance

I have recently purchased a new XPS 410 computer that comes with Vista. I am not sure if BF2 is a good idea to load or not.

Is there any point at all to load a game that might not work? If I should load it what are the necessary steps to get it to run properly? I see a lot of people here are having trouble running the game online.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

not quite sure what you mean citystreet.

if your unsure if you computer will play the game check the minimum requirements, but basically if using Vista that requires 1MB DDR2 and u should have another 1MB DDR2 to help run the game. You also need a decent graphics card, good processor etc.

If you wondering on what settings to have the game at, when the game loads intially it will set it at the recommended settings that the game chooses from reviewing your PC. See if you have any lag on single player. If not those settings should be good to play online. If you still receive lag on multiplayer there could be either, bad server - i mean a server that is located far away (differeent country) this would be that your ping wil be high. Anything above 120 ping is poor. Aim for 30 - 70 for good performance. A fast broadband is always essential especially for a game like BF2.

When playing the game (or trying) you may receieve some combatibility error messages. Simply right click on the game icon (on desktop or even could be on your programs menu) and then on the compatibility tab check "Run as administrator".
