Thanks very much :) I'll give that a go if and when it all goes wrong again.

At the moment, I'm happy to report that nearly 24 hours since installing the XP driver the problem seems to have completely disappeared.

Are you using the most recent version of the XP driver?

how is your signal strength compared to the Vista driver you were having issues with?

you will need to contact the site for that. Don't ask the member to, as they didn't upload those files. ;)

if they did, then alright, but don't go right ahead and assume every member who posts a link to a website, that website is theirs.

Regardless of if the the user who posted it is the one who uploaded the file to the site in mention, posting a link to said material is in violation of both the Community Rules of this Site in addition to International Copyright Law.

Thats great and all, but if the site doesn't allow me to edit that post, there isn't much more that can be done.

I'm using 10.1.1.7 dated 27/04/06. The signal strength is at maximum, which it was with the most recent Intel Vista driver. I've not noticed any adverse issues such as slow connection on startup or problems when resuming from sleep or hibernation, either.

I'm not sure if it's the most recent driver but I do know that 27 hours later there's not been a single drop, when before the radio was shutting off every 20 minutes or so, and I've been online a lot during that time including downloading a 250MB file while having 7 browser tabs open.

When a new version of the Vista driver is released I'll probably give it a go as for some reason it's important to me to be using the latest one - but for now it's such a relief to have the problem fixed I'll be staying with what I've got for now.

What process did you use to extract the driver? The only thing I can find are .exe files for that driver.

I got it from the Dell website, their file number is R127811. Download that, it's an .exe but it'll extract to C:\Dell\drivers. This folder includes a Setup utility but obviously don't use that as it's for XP (it'll fail with an error anyway). Manually update the driver and force Vista to the 'Have Disk' option then point it to the .inf file the the folder.

I'd be really interested to know if this works as well for anyone else as it has for me.

I have found a solution where my intel wireless 3945ABG does not loose connection and has full bar connectivity in vista..

I own a dell laptop and i simply updated my drivers for my laptop on the dell site (www.dell.com.au) and came across the driver for my 3945ABG wireless.. when i clicked the link for the 3945ABG it opened up the driver for 'Intel ® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN' but the release title states 'Network: Intel ® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN, Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection'.. The driver version is v 11.1.0.86 and now i have no drop outs and full bar connectivity.. the url to download the driver is:

http://supportapj.de...p;fileid=203417

hope it works for you guys as it has for me..

That doesn't work for any of us...our problem has nothing to do with limited connectivity, or dropped connections - it has to do with the Radio fully shutting off. This started happening ever since 4965AGN support was included into the same driver...and is irreversible to our knowledge. Thanks anyway.

I didn't even see them but thanks for removing the files. Members do have editing power over their own posts but only for a short set period of time after submission. If you find yourself in the same situation again, feel free to PM a member of staff who will be happy to help you edit a post. You can also use the "report post" tool if you need immediate help.

You said you dropped your connection, and had limited connectivity. Our Wireless cards actually lose their power and are shutdown and completely powered off. When it's on, we have 0 dropped connections...and full connectivity and speed.

Hmmm. I am following this thread with great interest.

I have a Precision M90 workstation laptop that is like the 1710 in some respects. I have the 3945ABG card - and have been working with Dell Workstation support. After hours and hours of troubleshooting, and hunting through Dell's resources - I still have no answer.

I have tried all drivers off the Intel site as well as the Dell site. I assume the 10.6.0.15 driver did not work for you? I have not yet tried this driver.

After much research - I think I agree with the post regarding having too many connections open. If I come back from standby and no other programs are running - I have no problems, but If I come back from standby and there are multiple programs accessing the internet, the driver dies. Not necessarily linked to skype or other programs though. Seems like if you have a lot of internet connections open - it will die-no matter what the software.

Unfortunately the 11.1.x driver didn't work for me. I'm still firmly in the 'Using the XP driver' camp, still haven't had any problems since I started using it.

I just got a brand new Latitude D630 with Vista Business and exactly the same problem. I've logged a support issue with Dell, but so far all they've done is sent me links on how to set up a wireless network and enable/disable wireless from the Taskbar. It looks like there's a large number of Dell users reporting this issue on the Dell forums but I can't see a real solution anywhere.

Btw I also have a Latitude D820 connected wirelessly with same card but running XP - absolutely no problems with this...

I have the D830 from Dell and had the same problem until I went back to the Vista Driver for the card instead of the default Intel one. Not one dropped connection since and quick and fast connections coming back from sleep/hibernate. I'm assuming the same thing will work for D630.

Just follow the instruction earlier in this thread about how to rollback to the Microsoft Driver and you'll be back to normal... Very easy, took me 2 minutes.

MG

Edited to add instructions:

Here are the instructions to go back to the original Vista driver:
1. Click the Window's Start logo and type Device Manager.
2. Locate the Intel PROSet 3945ABG network card under the Network Adapter's tab.
3. Right click and select "Update Driver Software..."
4. Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
5. Then select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
6. Select the one that says "Intel® PRO/Wrieless 3945ABG Network Connection (Microsoft)" and make sure it has Microsoft after it.
7. Click next and hopefully it works biggrin.gif

I've been having the same issue, and have been following the progress in this thread.

I've tried every Intel 11.x.x.x driver I could get my hands on. None have resolved the issue.
I've tried uninstalling the Intel drivers, and rolling back to the original Microsoft driver. Same problem.
With every driver I've tested I've disabled IPv6, turned Roaming Aggressiveness to 1. Lowest.
I just installed the Windows XP 10.1.1.7 driver that Halon has been recommending. Dell download R127811. We'll see how it works out.

For those of you who are having the problem and want to stick to Vista drivers, try Dell download R140118. It is the 10.6.0.29 Vista driver. I have not tried it yet.

Also, another XP driver I've gotten my hands on is R138747, it is 10.5.1.72 XP driver. I'm going to try this one after I test the 10.1.1.7 for a few days.

Since I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links to these drivers, just google the Dell download number to find the drivers I've referred to.
